David Baldacci (B.A.’83/H&S) received the 2017 Literary Lifetime Achievement Award from the Library of Virginia, which recognizes outstanding and long-lasting contributions to literature by an author with Virginia ties.
Rudy Burwell** (B.S.’86/H&S), owner of the Northern Virginia-based electrical supplier Encompass Supply, opened the company’s first Richmond office in January 2017. Encompass, founded in 2013, sells electrical supplies to subcontractors who are building throughout Virginia.

Micah McCreary, Ph.D. (M.S.’90/H&S; Ph.D.’93/H&S), was appointed in June as president of the New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Jersey, effective July 15, 2017. “New Brunswick Theological Seminary is an exceptional theological community living out its calling by providing a genuine theological education within a diverse community of faith,” he writes. “I look forward to working with the board, administration, faculty, students, Reformed Church in America and other denominations to further the seminary’s mission.” McCreary comes to NBTS from Richmond, Va., where he led McCreary and Madison Associates Inc., a psychological and human resources consulting firm as president and CEO. He also worked as a tenured associate professor of psychology at VCU for 21 years. During his career at VCU, McCreary held other positions including his service as assistant vice provost for diversity, quality enhancement plan coordinator and as co-director of the counseling psychology program. He holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the University of Michigan, a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University and a Master of Science and doctoral degree in counseling psychology from VCU. McCreary and his wife, the Rev. Dr. Jacqueline E. Madison-McCreary, have pastored the Spring Creek Baptist Church in Moseley, Va., for 16 years. They are the parents of one adult daughter. McCreary has received a number of fellowships including the American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship, State Council of Higher Education in Virginia Fellowship and the American Council on Education Presidential Fellowship. His scholarship and publications include grants to promote better health among families affected by substance abuse and numerous articles and book chapters on his teaching, service and research.
Nathan Burrell (B.S.’04/H&S) was honored by Richmond, Va.’s GRTC Transit System as part of its Black History Month celebration for his more than a decade of service to the James River Parks System and the city of Richmond.
Oscar Holmes, Ph.D. (B.S.’02/H&S) was appointed Jan. 1, 2017, as director of access and outreach for business education for the Rutgers University School of Business.
Tracey McGregor Mason, Ph.D. (Ph.D.’01/H&S), was promoted to full professor at Stevenson University in Maryland. She was also selected as the 2O17 Braude Award winner by the American Chemical Society Maryland Section in recognition for research work with undergraduates.
Sabrina Scott (B.S.’09/H&S) is completing a yearlong APA-accredited counseling psychology doctoral internship at the VCU Virginia Treatment Center for Children in Richmond, Va.
Alyssa Ward, Ph.D. (M.S.’04/H&S; Ph.D.’07/H&S), returned to Richmond, Va., in fall 2017 to join the VCU School of Medicine faculty where she is a pediatric psychologist within both the gastroenterology and neonatology units at VCU Medical Center. In summer 2017, she started two practicum placements for VCU doctoral students within her divisions. She is expecting her second child and lives with her family in the northside of the city.
