The Cabell First Novelist Award is presented on behalf of VCU’s M.F.A. in Creative Writing Program. Sponsors include the James Branch Cabell Library Associates, VCU Libraries, the VCU Department of English, Barnes & Noble @ VCU and the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences. It is part of the VCU Visiting Writers Series.

Hernan Diaz is the winner of the 2018 VCU Cabell First Novelist Award for his novel, In the Distance. Diaz is the author of Borges, Between History and Eternity and the associate director of the Hispanic Institute at Columbia University. He lives in New York.
