Kevin Powers was born and raised in Richmond, VA. In 2004 and 2005 he served with the U.S. Army in Mosul and Tal Afar, Iraq. He studied VCU after his honorable discharge. Kevin’s first novel, The Yellow Birds was a 2012 National Book Award Finalist; won the 2012 Guardian First Book Award; the 2013 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award and was named to the 2012 list of the 10 favorite books by New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani. Kevin’s book of poetry, Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting, was released in April 2014.
